Theatre was born long before television was invented in the 1920s; television drama is a direct descendant of centuries of theatre.
Such is the case in Oman, where Omani theatre began before the emergence of television, which began broadcasting from Muscat on 17th November 1974 and from Salalah on 25th November 1975. On 1st June 1979, the two stations at Muscat and Salalah were joined by satellite link to form a unified broadcasting service.
At present, Oman TV broadcasts its programs around the world via satellite and since 1997 has also broadcast its programs through its website.
Omani TV broadcasts many programs depicting Omani culture, including its vocal heritage where songs, music and dance performances at Omani festivals and celebrations are regularly shown.
